My Favorite Book
by Ken Liou (16 years old)
My favorite book is called “Dream.” All people have dreams. Everyone’s dreams are different. Some want to earn much money; others want to have a happy family. When you have a dream, you’ll get some power that may make the dream come true.
Why do I like this book? It’s because the book had brought influence to me. As a kid, I didn’t have any dreams until one day when I went to the library. I found this particular book there. And then I borrowed it from the library and read it. As soon as I started reading the book, I felt falling in love with it.
There were a lot of stories about dreams, and in fact I found my dream in the book. A boy in the book is called Jack. He had been dreaming to travel around the world since he was a kid. Then he started studying hard at school. He had been gradually learning a lot different languages since graduating from university. He did it so that he could travel around the world easily. On account of his hard study, his dream could come true.
Later I tried to search for my own dream. One day when I watched one Disney’s cartoon on TV, I saw a lot of foreigners in it. Then I started to dream. I want to go to foreign countries when I could talk in English. This is my dream. When you have a dream, you could be successful.

Environment Proctors
by Mike Chen (17 years old)
In this 21st century, we can’t imagine how seriously our environment has been destroyed and polluted, which gives rise to a variety of bad effects, such as global warming, greenhouse effects, and acid rain. Being a resident on earth, we have to try our best to protect this environment we live in.
The first simple step we can take is that we should bring our tableware with us wherever we go. Based on this concept, we can reduce many unnecessary wastes. The industries producing disposable chopsticks or spoons without being washed decrease the quantities of their products. Thus, bring and using our own tablewares can make less garbage than using the disposable ones.
The second simple step we can take is to take mass transportations, such as MRT, subway or even trains, instead of driving private cars. By doing so, we can cut down the magnitude of carbon dioxide; little by little, it can slightly slow the globe warming. Also, we can save our money from paying the gasoline for cars.
Being a member of the globe residents, we should do our best to protect the Earth, or we’ll exterminate ourselves, humans, some day in the future.

If I had one billion dollars
by Ken Liou (16 years old)
If I had one billions, I would like to contribute some of the money to others because I don’t need too much money. Some people in the world need help; if I had much money, I wouldn’t be happy. People couldn’t buy everything with money. Second, If the money could be spent buying anything of my free choice, I would like to purchase a family. However I don’t think this dream can come true because I am from a single-parent family. Dad divorced Mom when I was a child. Hence I would like to see kids in the world having a healthy family and having their own parents live together. I want to see that they could grow up in a complete family. I believe if I help them, they’ll help other people in the future. Service comes with happiness. If people could help one another, the world would become a prettier place. Why the world couldn’t be better? It’s because some governments only consider for profits. This is why wars happen. After the war a lot of kids become orphans. I want to see it stop happening, so this is why I want to contribute the money.

If I had one billion dollars, I would…
by Frank Huang (17 years old)
If I had one billion dollars, I would travel around the world. I have seen pictures taken in scenic spots of different countries or pictures portrating ancient cultures. These pictures engaged my full attention. I have also had dreams of traveling around the world since I was a child. That’s why I want to spend in traveling.
Next, I would establish a chemical factory to invent t objects for promoting the development of the society and constantly improve my chemical knowledge. In addition I would by a palatial house which occupies an area of 200 square kilometers, with a swimming pool, a garden, and a garage.
Moreover, I would give relief to people in need. Better save one life than build a seven story pagoda. And then I would donate the rest of the money to Red Cross on account of the people who are in the chaos caused by war.
These are the ways how I would spend the money if I had one billion dollars.

If I had One Billion Dollars
by Kelly Chang (17 years old)
If I had one billion dollars, I would spend some saving stray dogs and cats, and donate some to people in Africa or somewhere people live in hunger and under the war.
Stray dogs and cats are cute, but many people catch them and kill them! Life is beautiful and should be cherished, so we should save them and keep them from harm.
In Africa and somewhere else people are living under wars and hunger. They live in the shadows of death, on the contrary, we live in happiness; we should try to help them live in a better life. They need love and peace, instead of unfairness and harm.
If I had one billion dollars, I would like to help them as much as possible.

My Summer Vacation
Written by Kelly Chang (17 years old) in summer, 2009
I like my summer vacation because that was different from most of my classmates’. First, I went to the Army camp in this summer vacation. In the camp, I challenged myself in various ways and learnt a lot in each class. I made friends with people from other cities. Second, I also went to 30 Hour Famine in Taipei. That was a meaningful activity in which people try to help others who are in need, in hunger or living under wars. Last, in this summer vacation I read some books to improve my literacy and I also taught my little sister how to read. All in all, I did so many things in this summer vacation and all these things are my favorites! That is why I like my summer vacation.
PS. About 30 Hour Famine: “Through these events, countless loving people in Taiwan promptly responded to disasters in every part of the world, and by their giving they helped a great number of people affected by famine and diseases or displacement.”

I wouldn’t forget …
by Kelly Chang (17 years old)
I wouldn’t forget what happened in that morning. It was last Thursday morning. While we were in English class, the earthquake occurred! My English teacher was telling our class the story of Michael Jackson before the earthquake. She just said “Michael Jackson is the King of Pop!” in an exciting mood. As soon as she mentioned it, the earthquake hit us. Girls were screaming and hiding under the desks; however, our English teacher had no idea what had happened. In her exciting voice, she said “Wow! Everyone is so excited about it! You all love Michael Jackson, right?” Our English teacher didn’t feel the earthquake at all, so she continued talking about the King of Pop. All my classmates were frightened but I was very calm because I felt sleepy then.

Reflective Writing
Batteries
by Chris (16 years old)
There are some batteries you could choose. There are two kinds of batteries. Some are disposable and the others are rechargeable. Disposable batteries are zinc carbon, alkaline, lithium and button cells. Zinc carbon cannot be used in an extended period, and cannot handle very high demands. Alkaline batteries can provide power for many devices and can be applied in long-use situations. It is good that lithium can operate at full power in high temperature environment. Besides, it is able to deliver high amounts of power. Button cells are small objects which can be used in high-use situations; however, button cells have toxic components.
Rechargeable batteries can be used again and again. Nickel cadmium is one of rechargeable batteries. It needs to be consistently drained to total emptiness before it is recharged. Nickel cadmium has developed a memory; nevertheless they are gradually replaced by Nickel metal hydride batteries which cost more but don’t suffer memory problem. Lithium ion is a kind of less weight battery, but it holds their charges quite well.
